Humphreys, Spicer emerge as new Solo ping pong champs
Curtis Humphreys of WASA Table Tennis Club and PowerGen’s Catherine Spicer have been crowned the new champions of the Solo Senior National Table Tennis Championship men and women Open Singles competition at the National Racquet Centre, Orange Grove Road, Tacarigua on Wednesday night.
In the men’s decider, an all-WASA affair, Humphreys got the better of close friend Yuvraaj Dookram 11-4, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 8-11, 11-4.
When the tournament resumed earlier on the night with men’s quarterfinal matches, Humphreys defeated Arima Hawks’ five-time national champion, Reeza Burke 7-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-1 while Dookram won by default from Derron Douglas, who is currently in Dominica Republic representing T&T at the Junior Pan American Table Tennis Championship, along with Javier King and Luc O’Young.
Veterans champion, David Mahabir set the tone for the night when he ousted last year’s winner Aaron Wilson of Carenage Blasters 12-10, 11-9, 11-4 and Dayanand Maharaj humbled Arun Roopnarine 11-6, 10-12, 7-11, 11-9, 11-7 in the two other last-eight matches.
In the semifinals, Humphreys stopped Mahabir 7-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5.
Spicer lifted the women’s title by beating last year’s champion and two-time winner Brittany Joseph of WASA, 16-14, 11-7, 11-1, 11-13, 12-10.
Spicer reached the final with an 11-4, 11-8, 11-2, 8-11, 11-8 defeat of another WASA player, Chelsea Fong in her semifinal, while Joseph brushed aside Shreya Maharaj, 11-9, 11-6, 11-3, 11-3.
