PowerGen Cricket Club was ruthless on the field, but lost in the protest room after an appeal brought forward by Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) minutes after the teams quarter-final contest in the T&T Cricket Board (TTCB) T20 Festival Tournament.

PowerGen easily defeated Queen’s Park II by seven wickets in its match-up at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba on Tuesday night. However, as the dust settled after the celebrations, it was revealed that QPCC II had lodged a protest before the TTCB, citing that PowerGen had played an unregistered player.

The player in question is Josh Thomas from Grenada who played in the match and took two wickets for 26 runs. President of PowerGen Cricket Club Chaitram Ramjitsingh said he placed a call to the TTCB on the morning of April 3, to inform them that the club wanted the player on the roster. The TTCB reported that PowerGen was given until the deadline time of 12.30 pm on April 3 to officially register the player.

However, this was not done until 5.32 pm and hence it became known to Queen’s Park II. The Parkites appealed to the tournament committee headed by Rhyerson Bhagoo and including Parasram Singh and Rajendra Poorai. The Committee met yesterday and decided that Queen’s Park had a good case and awarded the game to the Port-of-Spain-based club. Queen’s Park II, will now join Queen’s Park I in the semi-finals of the tournament tomorrow.

Back to the game, QPCC II batted first and scored 118/8 off 20 overs with West Indies U-19 player Kirstan Kallicharan getting 34. West Indies T20 player Samuel Badree who was also skipper on the night for PowerGen, claimed 2/21 and Thomas 2/26. When PowerGen batted it lost three early wickets, but West Indies batsman Jason Mohammed scored 55 not out and Red Force player Akeil Cooper got an unbeaten 37 to ensure that PowerGen got past the winning target.

Scores: QPCC II 118/8 (20)(Kirstan Kallicharan 34, Joshua Ramdoo 15, Samuel Badree 2/21, Josh Thomas 2/26) vs PowerGen 120/3 (17.2) (Jason Mohammed 55no, Akeil Cooper 37no) - PowerGen won by 7 wkts. Decision overturned because PowerGen played unregistered player.
