No ‘Wonder’ we’re off to the races

Tuesday, September 12, 2017

“Hula Girl will win wherever she goes!” said Barry Hills when we discussed the next outing for this once-raced Oasis Dream filly last week and so division one of the Fillies’ Novice Stakes over seven furlongs of ‘good’ ground Leicester today will be most interesting.

Twenty-five days ago Hula Girl was fourth, beaten three lengths, to John Gosden-trained The Mums at Newbury over six furlongs; a length or so in front in third was Aim Of Artemis, also declared for this opener!

Sir Michael Stoute would have been encouraged by the latter, which showed good speed until fading in the closing stages, whereas Hills’ runner made pleasing headway throught the final furlong under David Probert, replaced on this occasion by Jim Crowley, why?

Charles Hills changes jockeys like Paul Newman changed his shirts!*

‘Probe’ isn’t suspended but acquiring services of current champion jockey isn’t a negative.

Realistically it wouldn’t be sensible to select Hula Girl to win and so we will play the first leg of our each-way treble into Morning Wonder, one of ten ‘decs’ for a Novice Stakes over a mile.

Kevin Ryan’s charge finished strongly first-up over an extended seven furlongs of Beverley six weeks ago, beaten only a neck by hitherto unbeaten Codicil; another stride she wouldn’t be!

Ryan Moore has been booked because stable jockey Tom Eaves is at Catterick, taking ‘outside’ rides!

Moore looks set to ride Capri in the St Leger next Saturday; that’s good as stable-companion, Venice Beach, is my choice and with Seamus Heffernan, or whoever, riding will be bigger odds!

Third leg of our treble is Chrisselaine, somewhat unlucky on debut at Ayr four weeks ago and one of eleven declared for a Maiden Fillies’ Stakes over seven furlongs of Newcastle tapeta which, according to jockey reports, is riding superbly.

‘Inventor’ Michael Dickinson must be delighted!

Leicester, 11.25 Hula Girl (e.w)

1.55 Morning Wonder (e.w)

Newcastle, 3.45 Chrisselaine (e.w)
