Training begins in the home
It is said, “Train up a child in the way he or she should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6.
I do not think we can do better than the words of advice of one of the wisest men that walked the earth, King Solomon. I believe the behaviour of some of our youths today is as a result of parents not doing what is expected of them in the early stage of these children’s lives, ie “train.”
Now I need to add balance here. I am not saying that some would not totally go their own way but believe me, if that child was properly trained and loved, this can make a world of difference. Let me also state that there are hundreds of parents who are doing this and reaping excellent results. We cannot discredit all parents.
The recent statement made by President elect Paula-Mae Weekes that “the public or parents are failing young people” does have its merits and while this will not apply to all parents, who the cap fits let them wear it.
From my personal knowledge I know of parents, instead of discouraging their children from doing wrong, are also partakers in these wrongdoings! Also, children are left to fend for themselves or the television, laptop or Ipad have become the parents.
Come on, that is what we have today in our society. As parents our responsibility is not just to provide food, clothing and shelter. More important is training so they can know right from wrong and flee the very sight of evil. Parents, let us stop dodging the bullet, and I include myself as well, for even correcting someone who may not be directly link to me I see it as my responsibility to some extent. It is called caring and being concerned.
Training begins in the home, do your best, pray and trust God to work it out. At least at the end you will have the comfort that you did all that was possible for that child.
