Save our young people with positive messages
If you examine the existence of a thousand violent criminals in T&T, you will find one common thread in all of their lives.
That is, they were born into a life of deprivation from day one. The majority are raised by young, single, educationally and financially challenged mothers, who keep hoping that the next man they make a child for, will actually stay with them.
Yet, what attempts are ever made by the state and civil society for that matter, to get the large majority of citizens to lead responsible lives. When do we ever hear our leading politicians urge our young men in particular, to build capacity in their lives, in the form of education and material resources, before saddling themselves with the huge responsibility of successfully raising the next generation.
Likewise, who is urging our young women to get educated and establish lucrative careers before even thinking of getting pregnant. Look at one of the most successful women in the world, Oprah Winfrey. She has no biological children of her own, yet she has mentored and cared for thousands of young people, particularly girls, through her extensive charity work.
So, I would like to urge our societal leaders from both the business world and the political arena to swamp our young people with positive messages of leading responsible lives, of always looking to make an enthusiastic contribution to family life, community life and work life. Flood our young people with thoughts that breathe and words that burn.
Let us all make that extra effort to create a society that thinks positively, works hard, respects the environment and takes care of the less fortunate.
