Some students fear going back to school

Friday, January 14, 2011

Students don’t go missing, something happens to them within the school walls that causes them to stop attending school. As a parent I know some students are scared of going to school. They are afraid of being or have been “taxed” (financial charge) by fellow students, they are afraid of being or have been robbed in the toilet, they are afraid of being or have been beaten in an unsupervised classroom, or even of being or have been sexually assaulted.

So much happens within the school walls that many of us aren’t aware of, unless we know or have children attending school. Unlike what happens outside of the school walls, which is what the media and the public are privy to. So to the average person some of these children might appear not to like school, when in fact they are actually afraid of going to school. However, when they speak of their fears they are told, as I (parent) have also been told, that “this is part of growing up and they should learn to deal with it since this is what they would encounter in their adulthood.”

I am certain if these issues are dealt with, children would attend school, they would be able to go to the toilet and not have to be bothered with the notion they would be robbed, they can remain in their classroom and not be fearful of being beaten or being “taxed.” When it seems that some children don’t like school, we (all of us) must ask them what don’t they like about school. So don’t be too quick to judge some of these children who don’t return to school, since they are as concerned about their safety as we are with ours.
