8,600 visitors arrive on cruise ships in two days
The Ministry of Tourism yesterday celebrated what the ministry claimed was the highest number of cruise ship passengers in one day as 6,500 persons arrived on the MSC Fantasia and the Island Princess luxury liners.
The numbers were confirmed by officials at the Port of Port-of-Spain. They said an additional 2,100 crew were expected in Port-of-Spain bringing the total to 8,600 visitors who arrived in Trinidad up to yesterday.
The current Cruise Ship season has been described as an encouraging one for the tourism industry with a 130 per cent increase in visitor arrivals expected.
Officials said following the arrival of the two vessels on Wednesday, tours were dispatched to 12 sites throughout Trinidad with activities to satisfy nature lovers, ecotourism enthusiasts and those who wanted to be immersed in Trinidad’s culture.
The Ministry of Tourism also continued the efforts to ensure that visitors received one of the best quayside welcomes in the Caribbean, with steel pan music and traditional Carnival characters present to welcome them.
The ministry proudly claimed Trinidad continued to lead the way in the number of tours taken and disembarkations with the Caribbean Princess which visited on January 21, recording the highest number of pre-booked tours on its entire itinerary.
Sites booked included Asa Wright Nature Centre, Caroni Bird Sanctuary, City Tours, Cocoa Plantations and Maracas Waterfalls.
The Ministry of Tourism, in its development of the industry, declared cruise tourism as critical to the entire process of economic diversification, and an increase in calls such as is being experienced will no doubt redound to the benefit of the destination and the country as a whole.
